Google Privacy Settings

If you use google, you may have noticed some notices (or even stories in the news) about their new privacy practices.  If you skipped reading it because you were in a hurry to get to your email, basically what it said was this:

We are going to track your every move through your google account.

For example, if you have an email account with them and also use something like blogger (I do for this blog) and you also use the RSS reader or Google+ and YouTube, they will be linking these accounts (so they will all be one big account) and they will start tracking your browser history.

For some of us, we probably don't care if google realized I searched for "potty training" the other day.  But maybe I did a search for "_____" and I don't want you to know about it.  (I did consider putting something naughty there, but my parents read this blog, I thought I should keep it safe for their eyes.)

So can you opt out?  Yes you can, and it's easy.

1. Go to your google account.  Probably gmail.
2. Click on your name in the upper right hand corner.  It will open a menu, choose Account Settings.
3. This will open another window (or tab) on your browser.  Scroll to the bottom.
4. The last option under Services will say "View, enable, or disable web history".  Click on "Go to web history"
5. If like me, it is not turned on, just choose "No thanks".
6. If it is turned on you will see a list of recent websites visited and searches.
7. Click on the gray "Remove all Web History" button, and then click OK.

Make sure you go back and check this setting again on March 1st.  This is when google will enable it.  Please be sure to check all your gmail accounts.  (I have five!)

And if you have any questions about that, please let me know.  I will try to answer as best I can.

Now, one last thing.  Don't get me wrong.  I don't hate google, but I do believe in SOME sort of privacy.  We just share so much about ourselves these days, it's all online and right there for the taking.  The reason I am sharing this information with you is because I believe in transparency and I believe in letting people know when their information (and search histories) are no longer private.

I am happy that google shared their new procedures ahead of time and let people know what to do about it.
Unlike facebook, which just does what it wants and tells you about it later.

I'm still super-annoyed that I can't control who is subscribing to all my posts or not!  No one wants to read about my potty training questions on the mom's facebook group page.  But hey, maybe that will convince my friends to unsubscribe from every comment and post. :)

Success!

My first week of my weight loss bet is a success!

Down 3.5 pounds in one week!  This tells me two things.  One, I was eating way too much food.  Two, I was eating way too much BAD food.  One week of eating better (making better choices) and reducing my portions, and look what I did.

I have not added in exercise with the exception of my Monday night dance class and the little bits of "child play" I wrote about last week.  I do know that at some point I will hit a plateau and I will need to add in exercise.  I'm really hoping I will have a treadmill by then.

I read a quote on a friends facebook status the other day:
"To look like a fox, you have to sweat like a pig."
I think it can be attributed to someone named Rachel Cosgrove.  I don't know anything about her, but I may have to find out.  I liked the quote!  When it's time to get my butt in gear and do the exercise, I will remember this quote.

I have decided to do this challenge again.  I have another box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch on top of my refrigerator to remind me again why I am doing this.  I want to look better, feel better and when I reach that goal weight, I'm having some Cinnamon Toast Crunch!

In the meantime, I set myself a smaller goal.  When I reach 160 pounds, I am going to have a Reese's Peanut Butter Egg.  Because they are everywhere right now.  And I really really really want one.  Five more pounds to go...

And look at that...I blogged about my weight, actual numbers!
....when in the past I would have been too embarrassed to do it. Nothing embarrassing here folks, just another girl trying to lose some weight.  Numbers are nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about.

Mmmmm...peanut butter egg.  Maybe in two more weeks if I work really hard?

No Running!

What is one of the most common phrases a rambunctious kid will hear?

No running!  Walk, don't run!

We tell kids this for their safety.  But take a look at children playing.  If you don't already have some at home you may want to avoid this experiment because you will look creepy.  But just think about kids playing for a moment. They run, they jump, they leap and they play!

Everything is fun and games.  They race each other and climb things. 
And they constantly keep their hearts racing.

Now picture your day.  Do you run to anything?  Do you race your spouse to the couch?  How about your co-workers, ever race them to the cafeteria?  Dare your boss to climb his desk?

Probably not. :)

How about when you get home?  We move slowly and we never "exert" ourselves.  So this is the little trick I have been doing this week to kick start my weight loss bet.  I have been eating much better (smaller portions, healthy choices) and I have already seen a difference on the scale.  Yes, I am one of those people who gets on the scale every day.  I know you are not supposed to, but it helps me keep myself in check.  I'm not one of those people who will just give up because the numbers aren't budging.  I'm one of those people who will skip that extra serving or a cookie or a soda because I noticed the scale went up that morning.  I only "officially" record my weight once a week.

Anyway...back to what I am doing.  I'm eating better....and I'm trying to act a little bit like a kid.  For example, my driveway has a small hill.  When I go get the mail, I walk calmly to the mailbox.  (mostly because if a car was coming down the road and they saw an adult running towards the road it would probably scare them and they would worry, because adults not in running gear don't run anywhere.)  After I retrieve the mail, I RUN back up the driveway.  And then I "pounce" on the backseat where my daughter is waiting for me.  And then she giggles.  Probably because I look funny, but mostly (I'm hoping) because I am being fun. 

And I am doing other things like crawling on the floor with her.  Or dancing like a silly person in the kitchen because she likes to bounce at the same time I am dancing.  I want to add in more things like climbing (I think I want a jungle gym for my birthday) and jumping and dancing.  I think these little things could really add up.

And I totally did a few jumping jacks in my cube this morning.  I was the only one in the office and I got a few seconds of extra calorie burn in.  Sure, I looked ridiculous, but I'm trying to act like a kid.  And kids don't care. :)

Going for a walk today at lunch...maybe I can squeeze in some leaps and jumps.    :)

Took the plunge!

Hey everyone...for a long time now I have been considering becoming a consultant for a skin care company that I really love.  It's something I have debated on and off for two years and recently started thinking about it more seriously.

I'm mostly doing this to feed my own habit.  I'm secondly doing it because I want to share the products with others and give them a way to get these products (can't get them in stores!).  I'm thirdly doing it to potentially get some additional income for my family.  But I will be honest, I don't think this will become my full-time job.  I do well in my current job, this is more for fun than profit.

I'm working on a google+ page and twitter feed for it.  I'm researching all the social media marketing tools I can to make this a success (plus I want to join some local fairs and stuff...).  I have a facebook group created for it (let me know if you want to be added to the group) and an email newsletter.  I'm debating a blog...let's see how many people are interested first.

Love my job!

Ever have one of those days where you just love your job?

Today was one of those days for me.  I was very busy all day and I just really enjoy doing all of this stuff.  I hope this attitude can keep up for a while.  Today was a fun day for me.  Maybe this means my patience-limit is at four days for staying home with baby?

I worked from home on Friday and yesterday, so that could be it.

Or maybe it's because my kitchen is kinda messy and clutter makes me crazy so what I really wanted was my perfect clutter free cube.  Maybe?

I had a busy day yesterday too, but it was at home, so what was the difference?
Hmmm....

Wubba and Wubbanub

Am I speaking some crazy new language?  Nope.  I am stating the names of my "kids" favorite toys.

First up, my fur-kid, Oscar.  This is one of his favorite toys:

This is called a Wubba. It's a toy that looks kind of like an octopus. Oscar loves it. He has two, one is missing it's "kong" from the inside. I can't remember if the blue one squeeked, but the purple one does. Even with the blue one missing a major part, he still loves this toy.

Up next, one of my daughter's favorite toys:
This is called a Wubbanub. It's a pacifier, attached to a little beanie stuffed animal. She has had it since she was just a month or so old. And she loves it.

Isn't it weird to have such similar named toys for your dog and your baby?

Will I ever learn?

Even when we know things are bad for us, we still don't stay away.

Like eating junk food when you are supposed to be on a diet. We will eat it even though it sabotages our diets.  What I am wondering about....is how sick will I have to get before I realize I should not be eating something I am allergic to!?

I gave Zoe some pear slices for lunch and when she was done, and she had not eaten them, I took it upon myself to eat them for her. (they were going to go bad!)

I probably should have fed them to Oscar because now I feel awful even though I took some benadryl.  On the other hand though...who is allergic to PEARS?  Yep.  Me.  I am allergic to pears.  Along with a host of other fruits and veggies which makes going on a diet and losing weight a real pain in the ....

Anyway, speaking of diets, tomorrow is my first weigh in for our weight loss bet.  I may have to eat some extra food today, really pig out, so I can have a few extra pounds on the scale to help me lose a lot in the beginning...haha.

Just kidding!  Or am I....

And on the subject of heart health....we all know I am trying to lose weight.  What you don't know and are finding out now is that I have decided to enter my weight loss bet...again...ROUND TWO!

Don't remember Round 1?  Here was my "results" post from our previous bet, almost two years ago:

Our betting terms are similar from before.  Another $100 thrown in the pot.  Specific weight loss goals for both of us (again, his is more than mine).  We have a start date (this Saturday) and an end date. (June 2nd!)
BUT....we do have a few changes.  This time, we have a weight gain clause.  We cannot gain any more than 5 pounds from our weight on June 2nd. (as of Sept 1st)  If we do, we pay a penalty of $50 to the other person.

AND.....we have a friend who wants in on this bet!  So we will have a third person joining us which is great...way more challenge and way more pressure.  This is going to be really tough for me.  I don't have a fancy gym or kickboxing classes to help me out this time.  I am going to have to figure it out on my own.

Love and Stuff...

I'm keeping the red Valentine's Theme on the blog this week.  I'm feeling the love!

Anthony and I like to keep gift-giving occasions simple.  We usually talk about expectations ahead of time. This is a WONDERFUL idea, because then neither of us is disappointed.  This year I told him exactly what I wanted for Valentine's Day.  I wanted chocolate covered strawberries.  I even gave him links to where he could order them online and a business card of a small local chocolate shop that sells them.  (and he used the small local business! yeah!)

So I got my chocolate covered strawberries which is exactly what I wanted and I have been eating them all day.  I did get a bonus though.  I had a surprise when I turned on my computer last night.  I must have accidentally left it on last night, because my background was changed to a nice love note from my husband.

It almost counts as a love letter.  But not quite.  I'm still waiting for one of those...I have been asking since we first started dating....I might be waiting a while for that one. :)

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!  I hope you have a good day regardless if you celebrate or not.   Sorry, I'm just too happy over here because I'm eating chocolate and strawberries!

Baby I Love Your Way

The other day she wrote about a new favorite song,  She wrote:
Just something about this song speaks to me.  Maybe because it's about a guy hopelessly in love with a girl.  I'm not sure I can honestly say that a guy has truly ever felt like this towards me.  I hope someday to find a love like this.
When I read the words "I hope someday to find a love like this."....that is when HER words spoke to ME.

Story Time!

When I was in 9th grade.  At least I think it was 9th grade, I could be wrong.  Anyway, when I was in 9th grade a movie was released called "Reality Bites".  I remember I liked the movie (and I think it gave way to the future The Real World and all reality shows..scary!) but I really loved the soundtrack.  On the soundtrack there was a cover of Peter Frampton's Baby I Love Your Way.  And I LOVED this song.  And in my adolescent day dreams, I dreamed of a future relationship with a boy and that would be "our" song.  I just thought it was such a nice romantic song.  I really really really wanted a boyfriend and I thought it would be great if that was our song.

Well, fast forward.  I had a few boyfriends (let's not count please!) but none of them ever became that day dream and that song was never "our" song for any of those relationships.

Fast forward again.  It's 2006 and I am dating a new guy.  We have been dating around 3 months or so.  We were cooking dinner together at my apartment.  I even remember what we made that night, steak and salad. While we were in the kitchen preparing dinner, I started humming a tune I had in my head.  Looking back, I wonder if it was because I knew I was in love but way too afraid to admit how I feel.  So instead I was singing "Oooh baby I love your way...." and then from across the kitchen my new boyfriend said "every day...yeah yeah!" and we went back and forth singing the song.

The next thing I know, I'm hearing that song on the radio, I'm singing it every day, it becomes "our song".  And then I am getting married and we dance to it at our wedding.  My 9th grade day dream became a reality!

So what's the lesson here?  KEEP DREAMING!  Someday your prince will come and never give up on your dreams.  My dream came true and we were married almost three years ago.  And even just last night as I went to sleep I thought to myself....baby, I love your way...everyday.

Nice story huh?

And on a side note, if you watch Family Guy, Peter Frampton's Baby I Love Your Way  (which by the way, Anthony prefers the original of this song, not the cover that I liked in 9th grade) is Peter and Lois's song as well.  Which cracked up Anthony (since he loves Family Guy) and horrified me. :)

All right, so I have never met him.  But he is friends/former co-worker with my parents and it's almost as if we were friends.  I read his blog all the time and I like to think I could now call myself a friend of a best selling author.  That is SO cool.  (Have I mentioned a great uncle that writes too?)

So his stories are not usually what I like to read.  But, the thing is, once I start reading his stories, I can't put them down.  Yep, I get sucked in.  His genre not your thing either?  Give it a try...but maybe leave a light on, and you may not want to be alone that night...

I even added my own two cents.  Sometimes I wish I could be as snarky and hilarious as these women. But then that means I would have to come out of my shell.  Sometimes you just want to drop some swear words into your language once in a while.  And sometimes I wonder if all of the things I say in my head (and not out loud) are really as funny as they sound in my head.

I swear (ha!) I had something better to write about today, but for now I can't think of what it was. I guess I don't have enough funny/good/interesting things happening right now. :)

Pots and Wooden Spoons!

Today my mom told me about a friend of hers who was watching her grandson.  Apparently while my mom's friend turned her back for just one minute, her grandson managed to unroll an entire roll of toilet paper.

I can imagine the picture is pretty funny.  My mom commented saying something about how you can't buy the best toys at the toy store.  And she is totally right.

You know how they say to just give your kid a pot and a wooden spoon?  Zoe was very happy with a small metal bowl today for about an hour.  And she has been playing with a wooden spoon for a few days now too.  Anthony and I try not to spoil her (okay, Anthony is good at not spoiling...I'm the one trying not to) and we try not to buy too many things.  I have been picking up some of the best stuff on yard sale websites and thrift stores.  And then never forget the power of a free box.  I can't wait to make a fort for her!

I remember one that I had when I was little.  We played with it in the basement of our house. I think there were cut outs for windows and doors.  It's amazing how much fun you can have with a box.  Any other thrifty or crafty ideas for toys and entertainment?  I do like to get crafty....

I actually won money off of the game and the really weird start to the game is why I won the money.

And speaking of buying stuff, today I am buying a set of barbell weights.  5 and 10 pounds.  Those will be a good start for me to get my arms back into shape.  Stairs for legs, weights for arms.

And I guess that is it for today.  I'm keeping myself busy so I can stop thinking about the game. BOO!

Go Patriots!

It's Super Bowl Sunday this weekend. I am the type of person who wants to watch all of the commercials. Plus my team is playing. And I think I want to watch that half-time show as well. I need to time my bathroom breaks very carefully.

This is also the first year that I will deal with having a baby whose bedtime is right in the middle of all the action!

Food, drinks, friends coming over, bathroom breaks. A lot of preparing and planning go into this.

I'm sure the football teams playing this weekend are preparing as well. :)

If my team doesn't...okay, I don't even want to think about it. Just don't expect a happy post next week if they...urgh, well. They WILL win. They HAVE to win. Until then...I didn't find this myself, I don't know where it comes from, but a friend shared it and it's cool. :)

Stairs! and Glee! and Ricky Martin!

I did the stairs last night.  I have no idea how many "laps" or "sets" I did because I did them during all the commercial breaks during Glee.  Now I need to make this a habit when I am watching TV.

And next week is the episode with Ricky Martin!  Woo hoo!

I might have been lazy last night and not done the stairs but I had a chat with my sister in the evening before dinner and she mentioned her charity event coming up this weekend.  (If you missed it before, here is the link to where I posted about that:  http://danidoit.blogspot.com/2012/01/inspired-and-motivated.html)

She is going to climb a LOT of stairs this weekend.  And she has been training.  And she has lost 5 pounds!  I wanna lose five pounds!!!  So to the stairs!
